The Nike athletic department line is a retro and vintage inspired category. The line includes Dunks, Air Force Ones, and Air Maxes and adds a vintage almost 80’s style design. The Dunks in Deep Jungle in particular have a throwback look and were released on October 26, 2023. There are many different types of releases of Athletic Department Dunks but we felt the Deep Jungle had the best vintage feel, look, and color way.

Are Athletic Department Dunks Comfortable – Pros and Cons Summary
Pros
- Good grip
- Roomy toe box
- Good for wider fitting feet

- Feet can feel loose in the shoe around the heel
- Has a stiff overall feel
- The leather is hard and plasticky, especially around the toe

These are true to size. What I found interesting is that they weren’t super snug to the heel or ankle, so your foot feels like it slips in the shoe. It’s good for people with wider feet but if you have narrow feet like me its something to keep in mind. Especially if you plan on walking long distances in these which may alter the fit over time if you break them in enough. And like all Dunks, I found the toe box to be roomy so these fit well towards the front.
Nike Dunk Low Athletic Department Deep Jungle Quality and Comfort
As fas as the quality of the Dunk Low Athletic Department’s, I was pretty disappointed with the ivory hued leather specifically around the toe box/mud guard area. This stood out. It felt very stiff and hard without a lot of give. It even had a glisten to it in the sun and in my mind, gave it more of a cheap feel.
The toe box was also puffier than I expected and sort of resembled Adidas shell toe shoes. Over time it will flatten out but I personally like the toe box to be flatter to the ground so it looks better on feet from the side.
The leather on the side paneling has better quality with more flexibility. You can see the difference from the leather overlays to the side paneling materials below. The side paneling is much softer with genuine leather creasing.
The collar is low cut and padded. It’s not overly padded but its fairly comfortable around the heel and ankle. The tongue is nylon and padded nicely. Feels good on the top of the foot and is flexible and sturdy enough to stay in place.

Suede accents can be found on the Nike swooshes on both the lateral and medial sides in addition to the heel. Suede was huge in the 80’s on sneakers and is an instant retro feature.
The suede is pretty good quality and changes up the texture from the leather upper. Its strictly aesthetic, since the suede is only on the outer part of the shoe.
Athletic Department Laces
The off white laces match the off white midsole and have a pre-worn look. The laces don’t completely match the leather upper which makes them stand out. The jungle green wrappings at the end of the lace give an extra pop and are a little thicker than the standard aglet.
The laces are another retro feature that throws the shoe back to the 80’s.

The rubber outsole on the Nike dunk low athletic department deep jungle has good traction and it should given the Dunks basketball lineage. These are obviously good for any surface and can hold up well over time.
The insoles are on the cheaper side and aren’t anything special. They are branded with “Nike Athletic Department” with 1972, the year Nike released their first line of shoes. If you need an insole with more cushion, swap them out and add something with more support or more cushion.

With a simple color way like off white/ivory and jungle green, the athletic department dunks can be styled with pretty much any type of pants. We wore them with straight fit darker jeans so the leg opening come over the top of the shoe a little more.
Styling the Nike Dunk Low Athletic Department Deep Jungle
Dunk lows are so popular because their retro, simple, low cut design and bulky look. And because the Deep Jungle Dunks have neutral colors outside of the green, they’re pretty safe to go with just about anything. Because the dunks are bulkier we like styling them with looser fitting pants, like the straight fit jeans featured above.
Nike Dunk Low Athletic Department Deep Jungle for the Office: The dunks are still a basketball sneaker turned skater sneaker. So depending on how casual your office is, they may or not be a good fit.
